Menopause—a term often whispered about in hushed tones and laden with dread—is widely misunderstood. For years, it has been framed as a symbol of loss: of youth, fertility, ‘womanhood’ and vitality. But what if we turned that narrative on its head? What if menopause is not an ending, but a beginning? I see many women who lust after their previous ‘feminine’ self and feel really down that they now feel more like a ‘man’ than they ever have before….but I’m often secretly thinking how glorious that would be- read on to find out why!

1. Freedom from Monthly Cycles

Let’s start with the obvious: no more periods. For decades, many of us have been tethered to the monthly rhythm of menstruation, navigating cramps, mood swings, and the constant need to stockpile tampons or pads. The end of this cycle means liberation from these physical and logistical demands. Imagine the ease of never having to calculate your next holiday around your period—it’s a small but profound freedom.

2. A New Kind of Confidence

Menopause ushers in a phase of self-assuredness that often takes women by surprise. Otherwise known as the ‘give zero sh*ts’ phase of life! By midlife, you’ve accumulated wisdom, resilience, and a clearer sense of who you are. You can now look forward to putting other people in their place as you know what is important in your life now.  Many of my clients report feeling emboldened, more willing to speak their minds, and less preoccupied with societal expectations. This newfound confidence can be exhilarating, leading to personal growth and empowerment. YOU are finally in control.

3. Prioritising Yourself

For many of my clients, menopause coincides with a shift in life’s responsibilities. Children may be leaving the nest, and careers may have reached a steady stride. This creates space to prioritise yourself—your dreams, passions, and well-being. Whether it’s travelling, picking up a new hobby, or deepening relationships, this stage offers a unique opportunity to focus on what truly brings you joy. Remember: Discipline IS self-care and menopause often brings with it that time and mental energy to dedicate to yourself.

4. Hormonal Changes with Surprising Benefits

While fluctuating hormones are often blamed for hot flashes and mood swings, they can also lead to positive changes. Some women experience a reduction in hormonal migraines, acne, and a decreased intensity of PMS-like symptoms. Additionally, the cessation of reproductive hormone cycles can lead to a more even emotional landscape over time.

5. A Community of Shared Experience

Menopause is a universal experience that connects women across generations and cultures. Engaging in honest conversations about this life stage fosters a sense of solidarity and reduces the stigma surrounding it. Have you ever noticed how men and women talk to each other at social gatherings? Men tend to talk about a topic that unites them whereas women talk about themselves and each other in much more detail- menopause is something you have in common with any woman you meet in mid life and beyond, it can be an instant talking point, especially if you’ve moved to a new area or trying to make new friends.

6. Embracing a New Chapter

There’s something profoundly liberating about shedding the expectations that come with youth. Menopause can be a time to embrace your authentic self, free from the pressure to conform to societal standards of beauty or behaviour. Let that mask slip!! It’s a moment to redefine what ageing means—not as a decline, but as a natural evolution and something to be treasured by society rather than shunned.

7. Physical and Emotional Renewal

Many of my clients find that menopause motivates them to focus on health and wellness in new ways. Whether it’s exploring yoga, trying out plant-based diets, or committing to mindfulness practices, this stage encourages a holistic approach to self-care. You may be responsible for childcare or elder care so really concentrating on your own strength and resilience is a must to support others around you.

Rewriting the Menopause Narrative

By shifting the lens through which we view menopause, we can see it for what it truly is: a natural and transformative phase of life. Rather than fearing or resisting it, embracing menopause can unlock a world of unexpected joys. It’s time to celebrate the freedom, confidence, and renewal that come with this stage—and to share these positive stories with others. After all, every ending is also a beginning.
